I am Nefertiti!

I wanted to share with you that both Mrs Bartlett and I have had a lovely worship with the children this week, all about a book called 'I am Nefertiti'. It is the story of a little girl who was worried about playing drums in a band. When she met the music teacher, she couldn't pronounce her name so said she would call her Nef instead. The story showed how this made Nefertiti feel small and less special - in the story she shrunk to a tiny size, and it took lots of saying her name properly for her to grow again - a wonderful metaphor.
 
 
Mrs Bartlett took this worship with upper school, and I took it with lower school. Both groups of children understood the metaphor; in fact one lower school child said that what we could learn from it, was that if you make people feel special, their heart can grow big, and if you don't, their heart will grow small - I love that! We also talked about nicknames and shortening people's names as a term of endearment. It made us both laugh that we both have issues with our own names, and shared these with the children as part of the worship, without consulting each other first! Mrs Bartlett shared that her name is Katy, but her full name is Catherine, and people never spell Katy right, and I shared that my full name is Melissa, not Melanie as most people think Mel would shorten from! All children are very aware that we shared these as part of the worship, and they are most definitely NOT allowed to call us those names ever again!
 
 
The children really understood the importance of this story and what we can learn from it, not just about making sure people don't mind shortened versions of their names, but also how we sometimes have to be brave even when we are worried or nervous. They were both lovely worships.
