Intent
Our intent statement sets out our vision our children within this subject and what we aim for them to experience through the curriculum at St Martin's. It links to our school vision and values.
Implementation
DT is taught in line with the long term map. Depending on the topic, this may be a weekly lesson, blocked units of work or a mixture of both.
In Year R adult directed tasks provide children with opportunities to:
*cook a range of different dishes,
*make a range of different structures,
*build and construct with a range of different materials,
*learn how to use a range of tools in our woodwork area.
Children are also given opportunities to practise and develop DT skills through continuous provision, including access to our:
*mud kitchen,
*arts and crafts area,
*junk modelling,
*construction kits,
*big bricks,
*woodwork area.
In Year 1 - 6 children experience DT projects within the following areas:
*Cooking,
*Textiles
*Mechanical and electrical
*Structures.
Through every unit of work, children are taught the skills of:
*Designing - what is the purpose of what you are making?
*Making - following a plan/step by step instructions and completing each step accurately.
*Evaluating - did the final product meet the design specification?
Please find below our:
DT Overview which identifies when each art unit of work is taught.
DT Skills and Knowledge Progressions which identifies the skills and knowledge taught to each year group.
Impact
Children enjoy their DT lessons and are proud of the final products they produce, which is evident in subject manager pupil conferencing.
DT has had a positive impact on children mental wellbeing. Pupil conferencing shows that they develop perseverance and reflection skills through their DT lessons. They also develop self-confidence and self-esteem, which is evident in the way they talk about both the process and the final products.
DT has a positive impact on children's physical wellbeing. DT lessons on cooking help children to recognise the importance of a balanced diet.
